Don’t say you don’t. I know you do, we all do. We all have these horrible lies and excuses going around inside our heads. We must overcome these terrible voices if we are to get to the life that we would like to live.

How often have you started to try something new and to start on your way only for you to start negative self-talk? This has happened to me many times, and took me a long time to overcome this terrible habit. When it comes down to it, these negative voices will leave you with the biggest regret. “What if ……, or If only I had ………

Nothing good comes from these voices so you have to overcome them, and not let them take your life and run away with your hopes and dreams.

There was a time when I organised a speaking event for 18 speakers, and after I had paid the deposit, got everything ready to go I heard it, the nagging voice in my head saying “Who do you think you are? Why do you think people would want to come and see you speak, what a waste of time and money. Just don’t go through with it” These types of voices have bothered me many times in my life, but over the last 5 or 6 years I have trained myself to catch these negative voices early and flip them around. I read a few articles on NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and they came to help me with a few quick ideas to overcome this negative way of living.

The first thing you have to do is to become aware, and catch yourself when you start this negative way of thinking. It is important to keep on top of this and keep catching yourself when the negative comments come up. Then comes the next part. Listen to this voice and take note of a few things.

Is it LOUD and authoritarian, or sweet and soft?
Is it coming from in front of you or behind, the left or the right?

Then what you can do is to switch it up. Generally if the voice is a loud authoritarian voice. What I like to do is to switch this voice from a booming voice, into a soft silly voice. You can do this with any voice, but I try to make it sound like Mickey mouse, because no matter how angry Mickey Mouse is you can't take the criticism seriously.

Try this technique next time you have those tricky negative comments going through your head and see if it loses its power.

Keep this front of mind particularly for the next week or 3 until it becomes more of a habit
